Indian women athletes are no longer concerned about treading into what is seen as a “man’s domain”. They’re breaking records in boxing, weightlifting, and cricket. But, another sport has turned out to be one where Indian females are proving their mettle in the international arena: Shooting. Elavenil Valarivan has done India proud by winning gold at her maiden senior ISSF World Cup in the 10 m air rifle category. The event, that happened on Wednesday in Rio, saw Elavenil score 251.7 points beating Britain’s Seonaid McIntosh, who scored 250.6 points. Elavenil is only the third Indian to win a gold in a World Cup event. She follows in the illustrious footsteps of fellow shooters Anjali Bhagat and current world number one Apurvi Chandela. The 20-year-old narrowly missed qualifying for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics as the two quota seats for India have already been filled by Apurvi and Anjum Moudgil. This, however, has not discouraged her as she sees this victory as a great “confidence booster” for the coming years of her career. Speaking to the media, Elavenil said, “I am happy and this win will give me great confidence going ahead into other national and international competitions.”Thanking her mentor, Elavenil said, “I am really thrilled with this achievement and want to thank my mentor Gagan sir, my coach Neha ma’am, and my mental trainer Kirtika ma’am, who has trained me so well and without their correct guidance, this would not have been possible.”
Considering how well Indian women athletes have been doing of late–from PV Sindhu becomes the first Indian to be a badminton world champion to Mary Kom being named Best Female Asian Athlete by the Asian Sportswriters Union–it looks like things are looking up for women. We’re finally moving beyond seeing women as just wives and mothers.
